Pulau Weh, Indonesia

About SUP - Lumba Lumba Diving Centre & Beach Resort

About the Location

1111
Weh Island is one of the best tourist spots in Aceh Province and it has attracted various types of tourists including foreigners. The reason is that the island offers many options of places for relaxing and conducting an adventure. For instance, there is Gapang Beach. Despite the secluded location, the beach is considered crowded as lots of visitors keep coming every day. The location is in Iboih Village and it belongs to Sukakarya Sub-District, Sabang City of Indonesia. People love the beach due to its pristine beauty and they consider it as a recommended place for photography and spending a vacation with families.

Pulau Weh is located north of the northern end of Sumatra, an hour by ferry from Banda Aceh. It is a mountainous, verdant island with waterfalls, caves and villages to be explored. Gapang Beach is located on the NE shore of the northern peninsular and is the definition of quiet. No bars, no clubs... just a diveshop, a few locally run bungalows and a couple of basic restaurants.

Getting here:

  1. Get to the harbour in Banda Ache Book a flight to Banda Ache in Northern Sumatra. When you arrive, take a taxi from the airport to the ferry harbour Ulee Lhue.

  2. Take ferry from mainland Sumatra to Pulau Weh On Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday you have the option to connect to the car/passenger ferry at 14:00. Or you can wait for the fast ferry Express Bahari, which is leaving at 16:00 daily -except on Fridays it leaves at 16:30. On Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday the car/passenger ferry does 2 trips at 11:00 and 16:00.

  3. Get a ride to Gapang Beach When you arrive in Balohan, the harbour on Pulau Weh, there are many cars and minibuses waiting for passengers. Following a rotating schedule, there is a designated minibus (and/or taxi) to go to the Gapang & Iboih beaches. For taxis count on a minimum of Rp 150.000-200.000 or if shared with others 50.000 per person - for a car to take you directly to the dive center on Gapang Beach. In a minibus it's also Rp 50.000 per person, when negotiating hard Rp 40.000. It is a 40 minutes drive over spectacular scenic roads with monkeys sitting along the road.

  4. Back track - For the way back, there is daily transport leaving Gapang Beach at 7 AM. This give you enough spare time to catch the morning fast ferry at 8:00 or the bigger car/passenger ferry.

What We Offer

Accommodation01

Our cottages and budget rooms were built specifically with our divers in mind. They are found directly on Gapang Beach, nestled in our beautiful gardens, next to the dive shop. We have 7 stylish duplex cottages (some with sea view) were it easy to spend your afternoons reading in the hammock.

The Living Room Cottages are very spaciously designed, and each duplex cottage has two units which can be connected with an open balcony.

The cozy Living Colours Rooms are in a longhouse higher up the hill, overlooking our garden and the beach. We offer two Living Colour Rooms with private bathroom and four with shared bathrooms for our more budget conscious guests.

Diving

Here on Pulau Weh we are diving all year round. Where the Andaman Sea meets the Indian Ocean, the deep waters and currents around the island sustain an unbelievable amount and variety of marine life. Which is ranging from tiny critters to grand pelagics.

5555

The landscapes on all sites are magnificent and diverse. The average visibility is 20+ meters, and often more than 30 meters, especially when diving deep. The water temperature is usually 28-29 degrees Celsius, with sometimes colder upwellings which bring extremely clear visibility of over 40 meters from the dephts of the open ocean around Weh.

On one average dive you can easily log a dozen of moray eels (of five or more different species), beautiful sea fans, hunting trevallies, neon rivers of fusiliers, a couple of stingrays and maybe an octopus or two.

Depending on the location, time and current, it’s quite likely to add tuna, barracuda, sharks (white tip, black tip and occasionally a grey reef or hammerhead), big groupers and giant reef rays. Quite frequently we can also see devil or eagle rays! The most colorful nudibranches, ghost-pipe fishes, tiny seahorses and squat lobsters can be spotted when going ‘macro’.
